Pfaff offers class in crafting custom beard oils

by Ben Haugmo

There’s no denying that, for many people, beards are beautiful. Yet even the most rugged facial hair can benefit from a little extra maintenance and grooming. One method of providing one’s beard with some additional TLC is through the use of beard oils.

Micaela Pfaff will be sharing what she has learned about the creation of beard oils with students.Pfaff has a background in making mixed media art, and decided to try her hand at making beard oils after a gift sparked an obsession.

“The beard oil thing came about because of my partner,” said Pfaff. “He has a beard, and a little over a year ago I bought him beard oil just on a whim, and it’s become an addiction. I think he has 16 bottles now. So I decided to try my hand at making my own.”

From there, Pfaff conducted research on how to make her own beard oils, searching online and reading the ingredient labels on the bottles belonging to her partner, Jared Midura.

Students will learn how to mix their own beard oils using a base, vegetable glycerin, and a variety of essential oils, including Atlas Cedar, Eucalyptus, and Tangerine.

Pfaff says that beard oils can have a variety of benefits, depending on the ingredients used.“There are ones that have anti-inflammatory properties, ones that prevent your skin from breaking out, and also strengthening the proteins in the hair.

Some ingredients can be purchased locally at stores such as Tochi and Swanson, while the base oils can be found online. Google Trends reports that search queries for “beard oil” have been on the rise since 2012.

Pfaff herself has noticed that more and more men are taking better care of their beard with grooming. One trend she’s noted is that more and more men are taking care to braid their beards. More outlandish fashions exist such as the “yeard,” a beard grown out over the course of a year. There are even competitions in which men will sculpt their beards into unique shapes.

With beards serving as such a hot topic, there could not be a better time to give beard oils a try.
