Homeward Animal Shelter: adoptable dogs

Culture | June 7th, 2017

This Saturday, Homeward Animal Shelter will be teaming up with Prairie Brothers Brewing Company for Biscuits & Brews, a fundraiser and meet-and-greet for adoptable dogs. One dollar from every pint of craft beer will be donated to the shelter, while the dogs get some much-needed exposure that will increase their chances of finding their forever homes.

The dogs currently at the shelter include Declan, a mix of Labrador retriever, Australian cattle dog, and blue heeler; and Brahms, a mix of Labrador retriever and boxer. As Labradors are among the most popular breeds, a little exposure may be just what they need to find people willing to adopt them.

Dogs that may have a harder time finding potential owners are Petey and Atlas, both pit bull terriers. Though pit bulls are a stigmatized breed that often end up waiting at shelters longer than most, staff and volunteers at Homeward would testify that Petey and Atlas are playful, affectionate, eager-to-please dogs who deserve a chance at finding homes.

For over 50 years, this locally-funded, nonprofit shelter has found homes for over 25,000 animals. Just last month, Homeward received the 2017 People’s Choice Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Fargo, Moorhead, and West Fargo.

Adoption fees for shelter animals include the cost of vaccinations, microchips, and spaying or neutering. Discounts are available to senior citizens and military members, both current and veteran.

Don Kenna, one of the owners of Prairie Brothers Brewing Company, decided to start the business back in 2015, six years after he first began brewing beer at home. Though he doesn’t have a brother, he chose the name he hoped would make customers feel like part of an extended family. The slogan on their website even says “Beer makes everyone family.”

Prairie Brothers Brewery and Taproom had its grand opening back in April, complete with drawings for t-shirts, gift certificates, and other prizes. The first beer brewed at this establishment was pilot pale ale, a traditional English-style brew.

Since then, Prairie Brothers has hosted local musicians such as The Cropdusters, Quentin Benjamin, and Anthony Lamb. Next Wednesday they will feature Warren Christensen, a local acoustic guitarist and assistant physics professor at NDSU.

Every Tuesday, the brewery hosts Trivia Takeover, a fast-growing trivia company with 11 locations in the Fargo-Moorhead area.
