Rocket Surgery Super Quiz a hit

Only three episodes left to record

The early reviews are in after the first two weeks of the Rocket Surgery Super Quiz, and it’s a hit. The quiz show has only three weeks left, so make sure you get out and see it on a Monday night in November at the Aquarium. The concept is simple: it’s an entertaining, hilarious, smart quiz show with crafty questions that make you think (hence rocket surgery). Hosted by “Kung Fu” Jimmy Osborne and Erik Block, the show also involves characters such as Darth Vader and Kermit the Frog reading questions, which leads to much guffawing. The first week featured audio mashups of two trailers from films, one horror and one romantic comedy, and you had to guess the answer. Some examples: “Runaway Bride of Chucky”, “Shallow Halloween” and “Notting Hills Have Eyes”. Another game is Osbourne and Block will name a word and then make you guess what type of word it is. For instance, you would have to guess whether a word is a bird, fish, lizard or insult, with some of the clues being “spiny lumpsucker,” “donkey-bottom biter” and “monkey-face prickleback.”

The hosts are making podcasts of each show, hoping that it eventually takes off with the help from sponsors. Then, they would be able to do it on a regular basis and either franchise it or make it a popular show taped live with an audience somewhere. Consider it a twisted version of “Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me,” unitizing pop culture and more crude humor.

Contestants (usually in teams but not a requirement) can win free beer and cash; but, with admission being free and Rocket Surgery being so good, you can show up just to watch and still have a good time.

The Rocket Surgery Super Quiz on Nov. 16 will be at Dempsey’s due to a show occurring at the same time at the Aquarium. The rest of Rocket Surgery will take place at the Aquarium however. Then its future is unknown, as “Kung Fu” Jimmy heads back to his home base of Kansas City to figure out the quiz show’s next move. But more audience participation will help them garner future support for Rocket Surgery Super Quiz, so if this sounds like something that may interest you, show up in the remaining few weeks.
