A free, family-friendly Somali Heritage Celebration will take place at Broadway Square (201 N. Broadway in downtown Fargo) from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 5. Attendees of any background are invited to try traditional dishes, enjoy Somali music and dance and learn about Somalia’s culture, customs and history through displays, storytelling and interactive exhibits.
Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney will present a proclamation recognizing Somali Heritage Day at 5 p.m. Although Mayor Mahoney will highlight the many ways that Somali Americans contribute to the local economy, society and culture, the Somali Heritage Celebration celebrates the values that all residents share.
The event is organized by The Ethnic Self-Help Alliance for Refugee Assistance (ESHARA) and partners. It aims to create connections across cultures.
“This celebration isn’t just for the Somali community — it’s for all of us,” ESHARA Executive Director Ahmed Makaraan explained in a press release. “It’s a chance to come together, learn from one another and celebrate the cultural diversity that makes Fargo-Moorhead stronger. We invite our neighbors to join us in honoring heritage, building bridges and shaping a more inclusive future together.”
