Fargo reeling after shootout

February 18th, 2016

What started as just another Wednesday in Fargo for many of us last week, ended quite differently. It’s an interesting feeling when you decide not to go out and meet friends downtown because one of your favorite watering holes  which never closes had its doors locked and many others were on lock down following a shootout with police at a residence near downtown.

The aftermath of the shooting of police officer Jason Moszer, who was responding to a domestic violence call. has many in…

The oil boom is over and New Hampshire has its say

February 11th, 2016

The oil boom is over

Last week, I wrote a news story about the budget shortfall in North Dakota. It may be hard for politicians to say it but it certainly does seem like the oil boom is over in the state. And you’d think a $1 billion miss on budget projections would be enough for state officials to get off this fantasy of hoping that oil prices will turn around and oil production will ramp up again. But it’s not.

Lynn Helms, director of the ND Department of Mineral Resources, has…

Iowa proved one thing, nothing is settled in the race for the Presidency

The results from the first state in the nation to pick Presidential candidates are in and here’s the important take away from Iowa. We have a race. Two actually. Sure Iowa doesn’t always predict who will be the eventual nominee in either party for President. But while some in the media and political establishment wanted to virtually coronate Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump before the votes were counted, it’s…

Open Letter to Heidi Heitkamp

January 29th, 2016

Dear Heidi Heitkamp,

As a North Dakota Democrat, I get it. We understand that you are independent and can’t vote the way we want all the time. North Dakota is a red state and the only way Democrats can get elected statewide is if they are moderate otherwise Republicans will use any of those controversial votes against them. It’s simple politics. I guess what we are asking is on some of those swing votes that you don’t vote with Republicans ALL of the time. It does get tiring when…

Can January get worse? Yes it can

January 24th, 2016

We are all going to die. That’s a fact too many people ignore until we get stark reminders of it. I don’t want to get too depressing in my first column for HPR, but it’s something that has been on the minds of quite a few of us lately with a mighty grim January filled with extreme cold and celebrity deaths.

I’ve seen two mindsets expressed following the notable recent deaths of legends such as Lemmy Kilmister, David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Glenn Frey. One shock that so many…
