Visions of the prairie at the Spirit Room

March 1st, 2017

The Midwestern states have often been cynically called “the flyover states” by tourists, only existing there as a forgettable, boring expanse to traverse between the coasts, where all the fun and excitement is really going on.

That may be an unfair assessment though. Us Midwesterners are in the interesting position of being in close proximity to both the rural and the urban lifestyles, able to pass back and forth between the two with only a short road trip. It’s the best of both…

Emily Williams-Wheeler: ‘Lint in My Pocket’

March 1st, 2017

“Color is my strength and passion and it shows in all my paintings,” said Emily. “Art is an involuntary movement for me – like breathing.”

Her colors can be found in her exhibitions, commercials, and residential installations throughout the country and across the oceans, such as Santa’s Whimsical Wonderland at West Acres. You would have noticed the powerful colors and playfulness in the installation as you passed by shopping.

Emily Williams-Wheeler is a professional fine…

Local designers collaborate to create Fargo tribute

February 15th, 2017

Before Dak the Bison was adorning the walls of local shops, he was a rough sketch on a pad of paper. Kayla Cote van Rensburg, a designer who started Cote Creative LLC, was brainstorming her next piece. As a Minot native who moved to Fargo and fell in love, she wanted it to be an elegant homage to her new home.

So, she took the most Fargo thing she could think of -- a picture of a Bison -- and designed the word “Fargo” to fill the shape. It worked.

“I just had that good gut feeling…

Forbidden Fruits

February 8th, 2017

Many of our actions are driven by a basic need for love, sex, and intimacy. Some people will try to bury these drives, or treat them as something to be ashamed of, but what’s the use in denying something that’s so innately human? Rather than concealing it, the erotic is something that should be celebrated.

Celebrating the erotic is a principle that the folks at the Red Raven Espresso Bar definitely understand, as seen with the return of their annual Erotic Art Show this Friday. Area…

Back to the drawing boards

February 1st, 2017

“I guess it was inspired by an idea to raise funds for our coop so we can offset our operational costs during the summer, when most people are skateboarding outside,” says Tom Kemmer, craftsman, proprietor of Hawk’s Nest skate co-op and curator of The Clean Skate project, a group exhibition featuring the work of regional artists on previously used skate decks. He continued, ”We also wanted to have it relate to skateboarding and (in) someway incorporate other things that…

Across the country in a little school bus

February 1st, 2017

On January 4th, Ashley Hanson took a little school bus across the country to document rural arts with her Golden Retriever Bodie. She began this five-week road trip to highlight artists working in rural communities from West to East and North to South.

After the election, she planned the trip because of the major divides in our country between urban and rural areas. She has visited these communities with populations under 10,000 – the majority of the communities with a population…

Rebirth in Death

January 25th, 2017

Laura Forgie, visual artist, has always interested in art and being a creator was something that she has had a knack for. Art was not only her interest but a useful way to express herself. She is inspired by what she sees around, especially while walking in new cities or places that she has never been before. She did not see the view in a certain way but profoundly recognizable.

“As I walk around, it is not hard to notice the ways in which we are impacting everything that was here…
