Junkyard BEER-thoven event retrospect

The journey to Junkyard Brewery for Beer-thoven fest was a fight from the very beginning.

Parking was no easy task, and when I got there I was ready to battle for a spot to sit because this wasn’t my first rodeo at this brewery. The event brought out an older generation that is young at heart. It was exciting to have many different generations in one brewery celebrating the life of a great musician while sipping on delicious beer. Junkyard created a new beer, “Deaf Guy,” especially for this occasion.

“Deaf Guy” - Imperial Alt Ale (ABV 8.4% IBU 50). Altbier (“alt” meaning old) is a style of beer originated in Germany, and they have been popular since before pilsners and lagers. Nugget hops are used for bittering, while the Munich/Abbey malts are used for the color, sweetness and body in this exceptionally well-done beer.

A four-piece tuba ensemble provided guests with the stylings of Beethoven while the composer “himself” was roaming the halls of the brewery schmoozing the crowd and enjoying fine ale. Aaron Juhnke, president of Junkyard, stopped to snap a photo with Beethoven, and when he turned around Beethoven had taken both his and Aaron’s beers, leaving Aaron confused and beer-less.

For the first of my four stops this month, Junkyard kicked off BEER-thoven happy hours with a bang. I will be making my way around the breweries in Fargo-Moorhead every Thursday for the month of February. Stay tuned for Fargo Brewing Company next week!
