Filling a gap: A proposed science museum in FM

May 23rd, 2018

“We need a science museum in this town.”

That’s what NDSU Geosciences lecturer, Jessie Rock, and some of her colleagues and friends have been saying for years. She was quoted saying it in the Fargo Forum in April, and it was like a phrase that launched a thousand clicks. Rock received many calls and emails from people who had read the article and reached out in agreement and to request appearances at events and classrooms with her fossils. The response was enough to prompt Rock,…

The DCP wants YOU!

May 9th, 2018

By John Showalter and Sabrina Hornung

We had a chance to chat with McKaila Ruud, the Events Coordinator for the Downtown Community Partnership (DCP) and she let us in on a few new and exciting tricks that the DCP has up their sleeves. One involves everybody’s favorite downtown event--The Street Fair. The street fair is North Dakota’s largest free outdoor event. It’s not only a celebration of downtown Fargo it showcases a host of arts, crafts, and food, and it attracts close to…

The Big Cloud comparison

May 9th, 2018

Small businesses all over the world are trying to figure out if they should jump to the cloud or not. Likewise, the little guys like us are trying to do the same thing. We have to do a comparison between the cloud and a microserver.

The microserver is another box for storing files locally in the small business. The big hangup is that it requires much time to repair and maintain the microserver. There is much work to be done, most of which is not necessary to explain here. Suffice it to…

By Dan Jacobson Sr.
dandakotadan@yahoo.com

Back with more stars, faster track and event swag, year two of Flatout Fargo offers a unique motorsports experience for fans and racers. The Finnish word Sisu describes Flatout Fargo, bravery, empowerment and inner strength to take on six second laps with a full track of Sisu filled competitors. The recklessness that inspires racers to take on Flatout Fargo’s incredible odds to overcome is alive and very well inside the Schollander.

The Taming of the Email

May 2nd, 2018

I get about 100 emails a day. Some of them are not my fault. Others, in a weak moment, I asked for. I spend about an hour a month unsubscribing from the ones that I don’t want or use. I have four email accounts from different email providers. All of these pieces of mail require management to keep from clicking from site to site trying to read all of them. The managers that I will speak of today gather all of your email and put it in one place.

Tip: At the bottom of all advertising…

Storage Wars Part 2

April 18th, 2018

Last week we talked about my lack of photographic skills and then what the heck am I going to do with all of these bad pictures that I take. Storage options for those pictures continues this week:

RAID
Another storage option is a technology commonly referred to as RAID, which stands for redundant array of independent disks. Remember that all hard drives will eventually fail.

There are various flavors of RAID, and all offer various benefits of intelligently spreading your data across…

Gender-bending the rules

April 18th, 2018

“The adrenaline that you get when you first perform is just crazy. I was just shaking the whole night. I couldn’t even make a joke I was so nervous,” Kyle Anderson, also known by his drag persona Tequila Mockingbird, said. Anderson is also the producer of Fargo Moorhead’s newest drag troupe, The Hot Mess Harlots.

Anderson’s foray into drag started two years ago at a show in Grand Forks. Since then he’s followed the wisdom and guidance of FM drag veterans Mia Starr and Raven…

PB&J’s Second Annual School Lunch Fundraiser

April 18th, 2018

I had a chance to sit down with Moorhead school board member Kara Gloe about her fundraising event to help students in need. This is a project she has undertaken outside of her role on the school board because it’s an issue that she deeply cares about. The money raised will support Moorhead schools and pay off lunch accounts with a negative balance. Personally, as a student who was impacted by this sort of thing growing up, I’m very grateful for events like these in our…

Positive Vibrations: The Edge Interview with Jurema Silva

April 18th, 2018

Jurema SilvaBy Tim Miejan
t.miejan.25@gmail.com

As a young girl growing up in São Paulo in southern Brazil, Jurema Silva was exposed to an eclectic blend of spirituality that went beyond the borders of her family’s Catholic Church parish. Yes, on Sunday millions of Brazilians attended mass, but during the week, on Wednesday nights and Friday nights, centers focused on spiritualism and African religions helped the locals explore their gifts of intuition and mediumship.

The openness of her society to…

Supporting North Dakota’s Next Generation of Creativity

April 4th, 2018

Photograph by Jude DillWhenever the topic of children’s education comes up, the subject of the arts usually follows. Despite the fact that artistic undertaking can have a positive effect on a young individual’s development, arts programs are often the first to see budget cuts for more “practical” fields. Many great artists got their start when they were young, and not giving young people the proper outlets to ply their craft means that we may be denying ourselves the artists and writers of tomorrow.…
