Putting down roots in Fargo

September 6th, 2017

If there are two things we seem to enjoy in Fargo they’re good beer and good food. Whether we’re talking about the preponderance of new and expanding breweries in the last several years or the plethora of new restaurants that come to our town, we can’t get our fill.

Despite the increase in restaurants, however, our food store dynamic has seemed to stay relatively the same. A few Hornbachers, some international grocers, a couple of health food stores and the obligatory big boxes.…

More Initials. Really!

September 6th, 2017

Yeah, sorry about that. The tech industry seems to thrive on using initials for every “new thing” that comes out. I thought I would acquaint you with these initials because they really are different and probably will be this year’s New Thing.

Just when you thought you had the latest and the greatest HD TV they come out with Ultra HD 4K color TV. This is called High Dynamic Range (HDR) television.

The technology behind HDR means that it can provide a higher level of contrast…

A love Letter to Lana Wachowski

September 6th, 2017

Lana Wachowski is a hero of mine, and, if you feel like crying, then go watch the speech she gave for her 2012 Visibility Award.

There is so much I could say about this speech, but no words are going to convey the power of her telling her own story.

What I can say is that this speech is a big reason for why I got into activism. It’s what encouraged me to be true to myself, to be visible in my passion as well as my sorrow, and that, ultimately, I was a person deserving of love.

During…

From one skeptic to another

September 6th, 2017

John Edward on social media, South Park, and paranormal studies

John Edward was 15 when he had his first reading. A psychic came to his grandmother’s and in trying to debunk her she revealed to him that he too had psychic abilities. After divulging I was a skeptic, Edwards shared an anecdote about his first reading.

“The truth is I felt like someone robbed my house--because this woman was in my space. I equate it to that because when people get robbed the main instinct is to put a…

This ain’t Ebay, baby!

September 1st, 2017

May I assume that a good percentage of my readers have bought something on Amazon or Ebay or Etsy, or someplace similar? Okay, so you are a good buyer, you pay your credit card bills and you enjoy your “stuff”. Wonderful!

Now there comes a time in your life when you MIGHT have a little too much “stuff.” If you suspect that I am talking about you, then you are probably right. The Internet has come to your rescue -- maybe.

Selling on the Internet requires some time, some…

New developments in virtual reality come to F-M

August 23rd, 2017

As I walked inside from Broadway that dreary, overcast early evening, I was unaware I was about to see some amazing sights without ever having to leave my seat. I was entering “Be More Colorful,” a Fargo virtual reality firm that had just turned one year old on August 1st.

Since then, the brainchild of husband and CEO Matt Chaussee and wife and president Katie Chaussee has seen an incredible amount of business, and not always from the type of clients I would have expected.

Writing a transgender character

August 23rd, 2017

I was recently asked for advice on how to appropriately write a trans character for a piece of fiction.

This is a great question, because the vast majority of people get it incredibly wrong. I tend not to read or watch media that features trans characters, because their storylines are often stereotypical and cringe-worthy.

The thing to understand about writing transgender characters is that being transgender is only a small part of their identity or their history. If I told you I was…
