North Dakotans will take part in a nationwide civil rights rally on Thursday, July 17. Protests, marches, rallies and acts of service are scheduled in Bismarck, Bottineau, Devils Lake, Dickinson, Grand Forks, Jamestown, Minot and Valley City. Events will also be held in all 50 states.
The July 17 gatherings are part of the “Good Trouble Lives On” day of action. The name is inspired by the late Georgia Congressman John Lewis, who passed away on that date in 2020. Lewis, a civil rights activist who worked for racial justice alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. encouraged the next generation of activists to "Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America,” during a speech on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.
The movement is nationwide but events are locally organized. Participants are encouraged to bring signs, practice non-violence and seek ways to support democratic ideals, human rights and civil liberties
