FARGO - Fargo police responded to a domestic dispute on Wednesday approximately 11:30 p.m. at 3101 32 Street South. After issuing commands for the male involved, Orlando Estrada, 28, to exit the apartment, Estrada reportedly brandished a large knife.
“An officer, who feared for his life, fired his service weapon striking Estrada,” a police press release stated. “Estrada retreated into the apartment and secured the door.”
After being shot in the side, and before being arrested, Estrada recorded a video of himself and posted the video on Facebook. HPR Magazine was able to obtain a copy of the video, and it is posted to High Plains Reader's Facebook page. In the video, Estrada shows his wound to the camera and apparently talks to police outside his door. He told police he wanted to speak to his brother, the mother of his child, and the officer who shot him before he went to jail.
Only after the Red River Valley SWAT Team established a perimeter and was able to communicate with Estrada, did he give himself up and he was taken to a local hospital.
Estrada’s condition was not known at the time of this report. Fargo Police identified the officer who shot Estrada as Fargo Police Officer Jacob Rued.
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is overseeing the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.
Estrada’s Facebook page reports he is married. He has publicly posted pictures of him singing behind a microphone, and celebrating a birthday with two children. He calls himself the “Minnesota Kid,”
Estrada’s shooting is the fourth local police-shooting incident reported so far in nearly as many weeks.
In February, Michael Schieffer led law enforcement on a high-speed chase near Jamestown, fired on police, and was killed, according to police reports. On March 5, a Minnesota State Highway Patrol officer shot Vikkie See Vue in the arm after she pointed a gun at his head and pulled the trigger, according to police reports. Earlier in March, Justin Dietrich was shot and killed by four police officers in West Fargo after he refused to follow commands and posed an “imminent threat to SWAT operators,” police reported.
