How would you feel about having the opportunity not only to fill up with delicious soup but also to directly contribute to a vision of social justice started all the way back in the 1930s? You can do exactly that by attending the soup supper and raffle at St. Joseph’s Church in Moorhead, put on by the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality. For at least a decade, they have been using the proceeds from this event, along with other charitable donations, to help the homeless of the…

For some reason I have always thought of West Fargo as anything west of I-29, don’t ask me why, it just felt right. In actuality West Fargo is much further out, but the boundary is quite confusing the further west and south you travel. Every time I head out that way I am amazed at the growth. Apartment complexes are popping up all over the place and with that more retail shops and restaurants: good restaurants, not just your typical chains, and there is no shortage of those.
So the…

With the rusty, brown shades of autumn leaves sprinkled with touches of red and yellow, autumn is upon us. Bright orange pumpkins, pale yellow butternut squash and the deep green hues of buttercup & acorn squashes paint the farm-stands and grocery stores alike. Gone are the rich, red, lush tomatoes, hand-picked from local farms, being replaced by a stunning array of crisp, crunchy, apples and pears. A real bounty of opportunity, time for apple cider, pies, cobblers, warming soups and…

What has all the happiness you might need for your taste buds, is just forty five minutes away has words like goat, pig and brewchetta and uses items exclusive to its city? Brew Ales & Eats in Detroit Lakes.

Swine isn’t a word we use in our everyday dialogue, well unless you are a pig farmer. It is one of those words if you say it ten times really quickly is becomes non-seneschal. By definition the term swine is a contemptible person, a brutal sensual person or any stout, cloven-hoofed artiodactyl, aka pig. And this past Sunday it was all about the noble hog and craft beer at the inaugural Pig and The Pint event. Hosted by Jade Presents and sponsored by Bernie’s Liquors, The North…

HPR had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with the Minneapolis based saucy Showgirl Mistress Ginger upon the release of her cookbook “Mistress Ginger Cooks: Everyday Vegan Food for Everyone” .
HPR: How did you get into performing?
Mistress Ginger: I was made for the stage! I love singing, dancing, and making audiences happy. I had big dreams of being a cabaret diva, and that ambition has taken me to where I am today. I never set out to be a cookbook…

Tucked away in the northeast corner of the Moorhead Center Mall, Everest Tikka House opened on May 14 by owner Saru Pokharem. One has to realize that India is a gigantic subcontinent with a vast variety of different cultures (and therefore cuisines). The Indian diaspora has had a huge influence all over South Asia, including in Saru and her main chef’s homeland of Nepal, home of the famous spiritual refuge Kathmandu and the daunting Mount Everest, whose stony façade…

With autumn in full swing and apples ripe for the picking it only makes sense to share your favorite apple recipes. Grandma's Swedish Apple Cake has been a crowd pleaser from girl scout soirees to post office Christmas parties, and it is simple enough that almost anyone can make it.
I'm not sure where grandma got the recipe but it has always been written in the back of her trusty, old German cookbook and has been translated from German to English and from metric to standard.
Grandma's…

With the recent anniversary of Hurricane Katrina I was inspired to write about The Cajun Café.
When I sat down with the owner Gary Gilbertson I found that I was meeting with a very happy, laid back, informative fun guy. He never stopped smiling while talking about his place, which I loved.
Gary has been in the food business for quite some time. He has been the owner of the Cajun Café for the last 14 years, the first four years in downtown Fargo before moving to its current location, in…
By Josette Ciceronunapologeticallyanxiousme@gmail.com What does it mean to truly live in a community —or should I say, among community? It’s a question I have been wrestling with since I moved to Fargo-Moorhead in February 2022.…
