GOING HOG WILD

October 2nd, 2015

Swine isn’t a word we use in our everyday dialogue, well unless you are a pig farmer. It is one of those words if you say it ten times really quickly is becomes non-seneschal. By definition the term swine is a contemptible person, a brutal sensual person or any stout, cloven-hoofed artiodactyl, aka pig. And this past Sunday it was all about the noble hog and craft beer at the inaugural Pig and The Pint event. Hosted by Jade Presents and sponsored by Bernie’s Liquors, The North…

Made with love and vegetables

September 28th, 2015

 By Kathleen Keene

HPR had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with the Minneapolis based saucy Showgirl Mistress Ginger upon the release of her cookbook “Mistress Ginger Cooks: Everyday Vegan Food for Everyone” .

HPR: How did you get into performing?

Mistress Ginger: I was made for the stage! I love singing, dancing, and making audiences happy. I had big dreams of being a cabaret diva, and that ambition has taken me to where I am today. I never set out to be a cookbook…

Everest Tikka House: a taste of India and Nepal in Moorhead

September 24th, 2015

By John Showalter

Tucked away in the northeast corner of the Moorhead Center Mall, Everest Tikka House opened on May 14 by owner Saru Pokharem. One has to realize that India is a gigantic subcontinent with a vast variety of different cultures (and therefore cuisines). The Indian diaspora has had a huge influence all over South Asia, including in Saru and her main chef’s homeland of Nepal, home of the famous spiritual refuge Kathmandu and the daunting Mount Everest, whose stony façade…

Grandma Lore’s Swedish Apple Cake

September 16th, 2015

With autumn in full swing and apples ripe for the picking it only makes sense to share your favorite apple recipes. Grandma's Swedish Apple Cake has been a crowd pleaser from girl scout soirees to post office Christmas parties, and it is simple enough that almost anyone can make it.

I'm not sure where grandma got the recipe but it has always been written in the back of her trusty, old German cookbook and has been translated from German to English and from metric to standard.

Grandma's…

Fargo’s Cajun Cafe

September 10th, 2015

With the recent anniversary of Hurricane Katrina I was inspired to write about The Cajun Café.

When I sat down with the owner Gary Gilbertson I found that I was meeting with a very happy, laid back, informative fun guy. He never stopped smiling while talking about his place, which I loved.

Gary has been in the food business for quite some time. He has been the owner of the Cajun Café for the last 14 years, the first four years in downtown Fargo before moving to its current location, in…

The Mainline is no Downer

September 3rd, 2015

Rainy Days and Mondays tend to bring me to Downer...but really so have sunny days and any other day of the week. Why Downer you may ask? The town itself has a population of less than 100 and is located between Barnesville and Moorhead and is home to The Mainline Bar and Grill.

The Mainline is housed in a repurposed potato warehouse formerly known as the “Mainline Potato Co.”. Lew and Theresa Henderson purchased the building in 2005 after they were hit by lightning while on their…

Easy Tikki Masala

August 26th, 2015

By Kathleen Keene

Sometimes you hanker for something that resembles a party in your mouth, right? I know I do. This is it. This is the recipe for which people follow me around at our FMVeg potlucks, wondering how to make it. You can make this as spicy hot as you like, by limiting the jalapeno, or adding more. Approved by a lovely Indian friend of mine, who said something along the lines of, "Nothing is authentic, just as long as it tastes good." Usually this recipe calls to grill or…

This Saturday may not be the exact, to-the-day 10-year anniversary of Fargo’s Red Raven Espresso Parlor, but as far as those involved with the shop are concerned, it’s close enough.

To celebrate a decade in business, the Red Raven will host a party on Saturday, Aug. 22. Kicking off at 5 p.m. and open to all, the event will have a vegetarian grill out, beer drinking, pavement games and entertainment for the whole family in the back patio, including such classics as hopscotch and…

It’s all natural

August 12th, 2015

HPR visits Mara Solberg’s organic farm

It wasn't too long ago that you didn't have to stamp “organic” on food products so people would know they weren't full of chemicals and that they were devoid of harmful toxins. All foods were pretty much natural and organic.

So as I drove through the achingly flat acres of industrialized farms just south of Fargo to visit Mara Solberg and her husband, it reinforced in me the need for more people like them, old-school farmers tending a…
