After 10 Years FM Derby Girls Still Believe

September 13th, 2018

by Ryan Janke
ryanjanke@hpr1.com

Ten years ago a group of individuals came together in pursuit of a common goal-to create a roller derby team in the Fargo-Moorhead area. That goal became a reality and now, nine seasons later, they are still skating and working to be a positive force in the community. They were guided by this common goal and borrowed a theme from the band Journey. It was, “don’t stop believing.”

FM Derby Girls has seen several changes and reinventions since forming a…

Paranoia and USB Charging Ports

September 5th, 2018

USB charging ports in public places are convenient but possibly risky. Data is transferable over a USB connection, so plugging your phone into an unknown charging port puts it at risk.

Let’s be realistic: You probably shouldn’t be too paranoid about these attacks. I haven’t seen widespread reports of charging ports causing problems. However, many POSSIBLE attacks could happen over a USB port, and avoiding the risk is easy enough that it won’t inconvenience you. Notice that I said…

Plan a legendary long weekend in North Dakota

August 29th, 2018

Enchanted Highway birds - photograph by Sabrina Hornung

With summer winding down, there’s still time to pencil in a weekend trip. Instead of heading east to lakes country we suggest exploring a few of North Dakota’s hot spots. There’s something for everyone here in the Flickertail state, whether you choose an outdoor adventure, scout out museums or historic sights or opt for a night on the town. If you think our state’s boring--you’re doing something wrong.

Video Games as Art

August 29th, 2018

by Nathan Arel
arel.nathan@hotmail.com

At first this was going to be an article arguing that video games are art. This is an issue that I find very important and feel many people are unaware of. Video games are a relatively new medium changing the culture as we know it and yet are often seen as mindless entertainment. But upon further research I found that, while not done to death, this subject has been thoroughly covered by sources who made most of the same arguments that I would.

Mixing your free time and computer technology correctly

August 22nd, 2018

I just learned how to print to my home printer from anywhere in the world using my smartphone. I spent a half hour teaching myself how to do it. Was that 30 minutes that I will never get back?

Can you do computer chores easily? Do you understand what the computer is telling you? Some people learn by looking at the monitor, some learn by listening to a teacher in a video (youtube.com) and some learn best by simply reading a book.

I have a larger project that I am working on. I have to…

Photograph provided by the HoDoThe Hotel Donaldson, or the HoDO for those whom are familiar, has been a mainstay (no pun intended) of the downtown area now for the last 15 years. In celebration, Dale Days this year is going to be focusing on giving back to the community and celebrating the community that helped to provide its success and stability for the many years they have been operating.

The celebration so named “Dale Days” has been titled such since the first anniversary of the thriving downtown business,…

Center Fest and the science of the center

August 9th, 2018

You may or may not have heard about Robinson, North Dakota... referred to by some as the “Paradise City,” a bounding oasis in beautiful pothole slough country nestled in the lush prairies of Kidder County and located on scenic Highway 36. Known best as a hunter’s or birder’s paradise, the town of close to 40 gained notoriety and sparked a bit of controversy when mayor and Hanson’s Bar owner Bill Bender and his pals indulged in a bit of bourbon and barstool science, questioning…

Local Love: Creative Businesses Partner for ‘Shirts & Shots’ Event

Local collaborators are excited, maybe even caffeinated, in anticipation of the Shirts & Shots event. It is described as “an evening event featuring local creators” and is happening on August 18th at Fargo Coffee in north Fargo. A collaboration of several entities: Fargo Coffee, Proof Artisan Distillers, XPLOR Music, and Dak & Collaboratives, it is aimed to celebrate and show love “for all things local.”

Time for the Boring Security Reminders

August 1st, 2018

Yes I know I have talked about this before but I am here to protect you from yourself. By now, we all think we know how to keep our personal information safe online, right? There have been so many stories and instances of problems that at this point every one of us feels like only the young or gullible fall into digital traps.

But the truth is most of us are not internet security experts, and instead are just regular folks who want to enjoy our online experiences. Us old folks fall for…
