North Dakota is Failing Our Queer Youth

August 7th, 2019

Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual (LGB) youth in North Dakota attempt suicide at a rate 58 times higher than the estimated national average for suicide attempts. Nearly half of North Dakota’s LGB youth experienced bullying for their identity. Eight percent of all youth in our state reported being bullied because other students thought they were gay.

This data comes from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) which is a statewide survey of 10,000 middle and high school…

Secrets about printing web page articles without Mung

July 31st, 2019

Mung, some of you might not recognize that word. I have used it for years without knowing where it came from. In this case, I use it to mean advertising junk and other things that may appear on a web page. There may be some text and other garbage that you don’t want to use on a given page. There is a way to get rid of this stuff in all of the popular browsers:

Articles on the web come with advertisements and other clutter. If you print them, you often get all that junk. But you can cut…

Scram scammers

July 24th, 2019

Scammers send you emails that appear to come from your address for one of two reasons, generally. The first is in the hopes they will bypass your spam protection. If you send yourself an email, you’re likely trying to remember something important and wouldn’t want that message labeled as Spam. So, scammers hope that by using your address, your spam filters won’t notice, and their message will go through. Tools do exist to identify an email sent from a domain other than the one it…

Dealing with sluggish Internet Connections

July 17th, 2019

You probably won’t be connecting an Ethernet cable to your smartphone anytime soon. But it’s usually worth running Ethernet cables to the devices that matter, if you can—gaming and media PCs (or consoles), backup devices, and set-top boxes being just a few examples. Running new cables from the first floor to the second can be a real pain in older homes.

I want to comment about the advantages of using Ethernet over Wi-Fi.

Ethernet is just plain faster than Wi-Fi—there’s no getting…

Cutting the cord

July 10th, 2019

I got an alert from a friend about “cutting the cord.” This is when you change your television reception from cable or satellite to “Streaming.” Streaming means you are getting your reception from a site on the internet. You may have heard the names: Hulu, Netflix, YouTube, etc. My friend was describing his service for use in his home as being very easy to set up. The streaming services offer different features but they are all cheaper than cable or satellite. This appeals to…

A Little Dob Will Do Ya: Spencer Dobson at Fargo Brewing Company

June 19th, 2019

Photograph by Britton Hacke

“I haven’t been to Fargo in a couple of years,” comedian Spencer Dobson said. “But it’s always had great stage time and funny, enthusiastic comics.”

Born in the small town of Voss, ND (pop 29), Dobson has been all over the Midwest and beyond: living in Grand Forks, then going to high school in Omaha, Nebraska, then starting comedy in Minneapolis in the 90s. From there he was invited to work on a cable show in LA and packed all his stuff into a Geo Prism. “I finished a…

High Plains Regional Rendezvous participants wearing fur trader era clothing - photograph by Ryan Janke

In a remote area along the Sheyenne River just southeast of Sheldon, North Dakota lies a sleepy patch of land that comes to life this week as the High Plains Regional Rendezvous kicks off this Saturday.

The rendezvous is a week-long event in which participants re-enact the life and times of the fur trader era, which spanned from 1610 to 1840. The week will be filled with many different activities that are true to the time period and give participants of what life was really like during…

Esmond population 4 - South Dakota Public Broadcasting producer Stephanie Rissler

FORT SISSETON, SD – Everyone knows small towns are disappearing across the Dakotas, few, however, have ever investigated how these ghost towns began and produced a documentary.

In some areas throughout South Dakota the buildings remained strangely intact, but the people were gone as if taken by the rapture during the height of the Cold War.

“Looked like aliens came and just took the people, but left the buildings and the houses,” South Dakota Public Broadcasting producer Stephanie…

Camping Dining 101

May 29th, 2019

Camp food

As a boy scout the phrase “Be Prepared” was hammered home at every turn. Guess what? It worked.

Now I tout to anyone who will listen “Preparation is the Key to Success,” and guess what? That works too. Coming from an avid camping family I learned early in life to enjoy being out in the woods and to appreciate the old adage, “everything tastes better outside.” I think that is true because you are hungry as hell after hauling all that gear to the campsite and getting…
