Thirty seconds into our ninth World Cup appearance “Captain America” Clint Dempsey slid past his Ghanaian defender and put the ball through the net, off the right post.
The twitter-sphere blew up and American fans across the nation were celebrating. They were in disbelief that they finally believed. But what should have been a tone-setting goal became anything but. It became an anomaly. A random act of individual brilliance in an otherwise poor team performance. The next 70 minutes…

The Fort Seward Wagon Train has fascinated me ever since it passed by my grandparents place just outside of Jamestown, N.D. when I was but a wee one-year-old. Covered wagons pulled by mules or draft horses, saddle horses with women in sun bonnets -- what about this equation wouldn’t capture the heart of an imaginative little girl, or anybody for that matter? Yet for some reason it seems to be one of our state’s all too well-kept secrets.
The Fort Seward Wagon Train starts out at its…

DogIDs’ south Fargo office is pretty different than other offices. A huge, bounding Great Dane named Cyrus quickly makes his way through the building, with River, a yellow Lab, closely in tow.
The business, which sells personalized, engraved dog tags and a slew of other accessories, was started by Clint and Lori Howitz in 2005. What started as hobby turned into a full-fledged business in 2010, when Clint quit his former job to jump in “with both feet.” That year, the…

Fargo-Moorhead has its very own Pride Collective and Community Center. It’s been around for more than a decade, serving hundreds of LGBT community members and allies throughout the years. Yet still not many know of the establishment. Why?
Location. The center was located in a town site building in Moorhead and didn’t even have a front entrance. Now that’s all about to change.
The Pride Center is relocating to First…

KNDS 96.3, a low power FM radio station, recently moved its broadcast studio from North Dakota State University campus to High Plains Reader’s Brownstone office downtown on 8th Street. The move was made in part because NDSU is planning on demolishing the old studios to make from badly needed parking on campus.
KNDS is a partnership between NDSU and Radio Free Fargo, a nonprofit. As the station approaches its 10th anniversary in October, officials feel the move is a positive one that…

This year has truly been our “best awards ever.” Hundreds came to our Best of the Best party on April 16, thousands voted (we nearly doubled our numbers from previous years) and spirits have been nothing but high all around. We at HPR are inspired.
Big thank you to our five comedian finalists, Adam Quesnell, Amir Bikic, Erik Block, JD Provorse and Will Spottedbear, for our being our best emcees ever. They kept the room elated, energized, laughing and moving.
Big thank you to…

Fargo native and renowned feminist Jennifer Baumgardner has been a strong force in bringing the provocative SLUT: The Play to Fargo this weekend.
The play is about the sexual assault of a young girl in the back of a cab, and the event’s aftermath. The script was inspired by real-life experiences of girls ages 14-17 years-old from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, according to sluttheplay.com.
The word “slut” is commonly…

She says she doesn’t like when people tell her who she should interview. She knows who she wants to interview: random people who she finds spur of the moment. The interviews aren’t supposed to be predetermined.
Kaytlin Dargen is the primary photographer for Humans of Fargo, a community project inspired by its widely famous predecessor, Humans of New York. Humans of Fargo isn’t the first project to spring up as a mirror of the booming New York photo blog, and it likely won’t be…
By Josette Ciceronunapologeticallyanxiousme@gmail.com What does it mean to truly live in a community —or should I say, among community? It’s a question I have been wrestling with since I moved to Fargo-Moorhead in February 2022.…
