FARGO--I’ve been fortunate enough to grow up in Fargo during a time of growth and cultural development. One thing I’ve been holding out for while watching Fargo boom is diversification of food culture. Okay, to be honest, I’m talking vegan friendly food culture. My parents and I have been riding vegan and vegetarian diets for as long as I can remember. Luckily for us, many restaurants downtown have finally started coming up with…

Seven breweries and seven restaurants are teaming up for the 4th Annual The Pig & The Pint, which will take place at the Sanctuary Events Center in downtown Fargo on Thursday, November 8.
The Pig & The Pint is presented by Bernie’s Wines & Liquors who also presents the annual Bacon & Beer Festival, which is held in March and recently moved from Scheels Arena to the Fargodome. What separates The Pig & The Pint from the Bacon & Beer Festival is the VIP…

If you are a parent of a child in the Fargo Public School (FPS) system, like I am, chances are you send your son or daughter off every morning with little or no thought about what they are going to do for lunch that day. We know they will eat, because we paid for lunch for the semester, or made arrangements to make sure their bellies are full, and they can concentrate on learning. But how much thought do we as parents give to the who,…

The scent of sauerkraut will be in the air next Wednesday when the Wishek Association of Commerce hosts the 93rd Annual Sauerkraut Day festival in Wishek, ND.
The city of Wishek is situated 30 miles east of the Missouri River on Highway 13 in south-central North Dakota, about 50 miles south of Interstate 94 and 30 miles north of the South Dakota border. While it is a rural, farming community that long-time resident and retired school principal Cleo…

There’s something to be said about a good bar. There’s a recipe and there’s more to it than grabbing a stool and getting soused but you can do that too. There’s often some sense of fellowship or community there, especially when everything else that seems familiar seems to be rapidly disappearing. I’ve come across a few towns where the local watering hole is the last business standing -- even outlasting houses of worship.
In our August 8 cover story, “Red River Rainbow…

As I sat across from my wife at Himalayan Yak Tuesday evening, it dawned on me that time had slowed down. So often when we go out to eat, we are in a hurry. We get anxious when we aren’t greeted instantly. We want our drinks ASAP. We want to sit, order, eat, and go. And we want to do it as quickly as possible. That wasn’t how my experience was at Himalayan Yak. I had to slow down and take in the experience. Instead of the usual hurried meal, we were…

Hunger is an issue among us, and with 1 in 9 people between Cass and Clay every year using food pantries to sustain themselves it is an issue that needs to be addressed. While we all think about starving children in third world countries and in disaster areas, we must also look at our neighbors, friends and those we pass on the streets and wonder, “are you hungry?”
“When is the last time you had a nutritious meal?”
“How are you feeling?”
Food, particularly nutritious, fresh,…

As winter approaches the yearning to leave your comfortably warm home and venture out into the Fargo frozen wasteland lessens. When you get hungry though, or even hangry, food must be readily available. Now if you’re like me, heading to the grocery store or even a drive through at any hour seems like a chore. You have to brush off your car, scrape your windows, and by this point, your even hungrier. For those evenings when you’re craving something different, exotic or new,…

If you are a gardener in the area, you know that this is the time of year when zucchini becomes plentiful. In fact, many have a tough time using all of it. You may see just a small little zucchini on one trip to the garden, but when you come back the next day, it has turned into an enormous zucchini monster that could feed an army. We find ways to use zucchini in all sorts of creative ways from zucchini bread, to zucchini desserts, to grilled zucchini.…

Tucked away in the Moorhead Center Mall north sits a newly emerging cultural experience. A place for exploration of flavors and a wonderful environment for learning about spice, and deliciousness.
A young couple from Atlanta decided to give it a go in the FM area about six months ago. The previous tenants of this location didn’t find success, but I am optimistic that this establishment will survive and thrive in the newly emerging Moorhead.
Previous to my dinner meeting with this…
By Josette Ciceronunapologeticallyanxiousme@gmail.com What does it mean to truly live in a community —or should I say, among community? It’s a question I have been wrestling with since I moved to Fargo-Moorhead in February 2022.…
